Richland Township
Richland Township covers 21 square miles in Upper Bucks County, southeast of Milford Township, and surrounds the Boroughs of Quakertown and Richlandtown. It was incorporated in 1734. In colonial times this region was called the Great Swamp.
Today there are State Game Lands along Bog Creek in the southern part of the Township near Paletown, in the area known as the Quakertown Swamp. This is the largest freshwater inland wetland in southeastern Pennsylvania, with over 400 acres of diverse plant and animal communities. The swamp is home to a blue heron rookery and provides habitat for over 90 bird species.Further north is the village of California, at the intersection of Cherry and California Roads. It was established in 1849 by Frederick Wolf, who started an inn called the California Hotel, named after the gold rush that was taking place out West.
