New Hope lies along the Delaware River in Central Bucks County, surrounded by Solebury Township. Only 1.1 square mile, the Borough traces its history to a land grant from William Penn in 1710. About 1719, John Wells established a ferry that provided a direct route to New Jersey and New York, and in 1734 he opened the Ferry Tavern. New Hope borough was incorporated in 1837. Long known as an "arts community," it is a popular destination for visitors to Bucks County. The Delaware Canal, New Hope and Ivyland Railroad, Bucks County Playhouse, art galleries, antique stores, boutiques and restaurants all contribute to the wealth of interesting things to do in New Hope. The New Hope Information Center is at the corner of Main and Mechanic Streets.
